Eco-Friendly: Our love for Gaia

The trees are our lungs, the rivers our circulation, the air our breath, and the earth our body. – Deepak Chopra

Happy Earth Day!! In celebration of this big, beautiful planet we are so lucky to have the pleasure of co-exiting upon I wanted to talk more in depth of some eco-friendly news!

In case you missed it, I made a teaser announcement in my post last week that Star Seed tee’s are eco-friendly and 100% Sweatshop-free.

I spent a great deal of time behind the scenes doing research and ensuring every step in the process is done out of love for Gaia and integrity of all.

As the designer and creator of all things Star Seed, I am very selective and intentional behind everything I do here—from inspirational content I share to the products I offer. If our amazing Star Seed products empower you in some way and you feel a connection with it, then I’ve done my job and couldn’t be happier. At the end of the day, I hope you feel the love that goes into it as well as the love extended outward for the planet.

This same high standard for quality and selectiveness extends into my shop operations as well.

As a brand we put our focus where our values are:

  • Collaboration
  • Love for Gaia
  • Unity

How are our shirts eco-friendly? I chose to go with Bella + Canvas as the exclusive source for our shirts not only because of their superior, super-soft quality but because it’s no secret they’re leading the way in eco-friendly operations. It takes a lot of extra work to align with sustainability.

That's why I appreciate their green philosophies as a company through and through:

  • Focus on energy reduction
  • Water reduction and waste reduction
  • Ultra-efficient dye machines save over 24 million gallons of water a week
  • Manufacturing facilities produce almost zero landfill waste. (That's amazing!!!)

You can read more about how they put the earth first here.

So, you say all the products in your shop are sweatshop-free? Yes, that’s correct! The fashion industry and consumer goods industry has been plagued by unethical human rights. Child labor, unfair wages, horrible work conditions, etc. I’ve had to turn away from other companies out there offering the tempting allure of making more profit at a cheaper price point in exchange for doing what’s right.

I’m sorry, but I’m not going to let you buy a shirt off me that was stitched by an 8-year-old halfway across the world. Eeks!!

With your support in Star Seed, not only can you be ensured we source sustainable products with our unique designs that speak to the soul but we’re also planting trees in the process.

I’m SO excited we’ve found the perfect partner to help put more trees upon the planet: One Tree Planted.

Why am I so excited? I just think they’re the coolest organization - and MAN do we need more of them.

Where there’s trees. There’s life.

One Tree Planted has been around since 2015 and has planted over 2 million trees in all corners of the world. Get even more excited because they seem to be really ramping up with 1.3 million planted last year alone!

Keepers of the status of tree coverage and tree loss they have this amazing Global Forest Watch tool that shows areas needing a lot of love.

What I love about them and what they’re doing falls on two things: community and restoration.

You know we’re big advocates for unity so naturally, when I see that One Tree Planted works with remote areas and third world countries to plant trees it brings people from that area together.

Take their project to Rwanda for example. Not only did they partner with local communities to plant trees back in 2018 but they’re at it again with another phase of the project drive:

Rwanda’s forests support a wealth of biodiversity and natural resources. The Gishwati-Mukura forests of Rwanda once spanned 253,000 hectares, covering the land with over 60 species of trees and providing habitat to chimpanzees. Due to illegal mining and the resettlement of households after the genocide in 1994, overgrazing and tree cutting reduced the forests to a mere 3,558 ha. Smallholder farmers feel the impacts of that degradation and understand the importance of landscape restoration for water, energy and food security. This project will help a women’s cooperative, led by local farmer Agnes Uwifashije, to revive land in Mukura.

With donations to this project, they will mentor and build the skills of 2,000 farmers to restore the land with their partner with ARCOS (Albertine Rift Conservation Society) while empowering women. It’s not just sustainability for our physical earth but also to sustain life.

More trees means less soil erosion for local farmers, opening up to planting food sources such as lemons, avocados, tomatoes, and more. Providing security, income generation and a better quality of life.

As you can see they specialize in turning deforestation into reforestation.

Now, with each order, you have the option to donate $1 to plant a tree.

One tree that will stand and for decades. One tree that will cycle an average of 10 metric tons of oxygen in the air in its lifetime to improve the air quality for all living breathing beings. What’s the last thing you spent $1 that had more than a lifetime return on it?? I can’t think of a single thing.

As we continue to grow and expand we will always stay committed to these values. One day we hope to match donations as well so we can maximize the positive impact we make together even further.

Thank you for choosing Star Seed and for as always, for trusting me along your journey. Much love and gratitude to Gaia and to you for your support. If you’re into it, go hug a tree and thank it for being!!
